How to read live football odds
Odds look like numbers until you know what they mean. A plain-English guide to reading real-time football odds, implied probability and why live prices move.
What odds actually tell you
Odds are a price. They tell you two things at once: how much a correct prediction returns, and how likely the market thinks that outcome is. On Hatrick, the odds you see in Live Mode are real-time — they move with the match as it happens, driven by the TxLINE feed.
Once you can read a price, the whole board stops looking like random numbers and starts looking like a live map of what the market believes.
Decimal odds in one minute
Hatrick shows decimal odds. The number is the total return per unit staked, including your stake back.
- Odds of 2.00 — a correct prediction doubles your stake. Stake 10, get 20 back (10 profit).
- Odds of 1.50 — a strong favourite. Stake 10, get 15 back (5 profit).
- Odds of 4.00 — an underdog. Stake 10, get 40 back (30 profit).
The lower the number, the more likely the market thinks the outcome is — and the less it pays. The higher the number, the less likely, and the more it pays.
Turning odds into probability
Decimal odds convert to an implied probability with one small sum: divide 1 by the odds.
- 2.00 → 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50%
- 1.50 → 1 ÷ 1.50 = 67%
- 4.00 → 1 ÷ 4.00 = 25%
This is the single most useful habit you can build. When you look at a price, translate it into a percentage in your head. If the market says a team is 67% to win and you think they are closer to 50%, the two of you disagree — and that disagreement is the whole point of a prediction.
Why live odds move
In Live Mode, prices are not fixed. They react to the match in real time:
- A goal swings the odds hard toward the scoring team the instant TxLINE confirms it.
- A red card shifts the balance toward the team with eleven players on the pitch.
- Time running down compresses the odds — with fewer minutes left, outcomes get more certain and prices tighten.
Because Hatrick uses the confirmed TxLINE feed, the price you see reflects verified events, not rumour. When the board moves, something real happened on the pitch.
The three common markets
Most Live Mode matches expose the same core markets:
- 1X2 — home win, draw, or away win. The classic three-way market.
- Over/Under — will the total number of goals be over or under a set line, usually 2.5. This is about how open the game is, not who wins.
- In-play props — shorter-lived markets that open and settle during the match, like the next event or a specific outcome.
Each market has its own odds, and each reacts differently to the same event. A goal that helps the favourite in the 1X2 market also pushes the Over line closer — one event, two price moves.
Reading the board like a pro
- Always convert to probability. A price only means something once it is a percentage in your head.
- Watch the move, not just the number. A team drifting from 1.80 to 2.20 is telling you the market is losing faith — that trend is information.
- Remember the margin. Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes and you will get slightly more than 100%. That overround is the built-in margin; it is normal, and it means the true probabilities are a touch lower than the raw prices suggest.
- Let the feed do the work. In Live Mode you do not have to refresh anything. The odds update themselves as the match unfolds, so you can focus on reading the move instead of chasing the number.
